Casa del Pulpo · House of the Octopus

We named it for the wild life of the Sea of Cortez.

Playa Encanto has some of the most dramatic tides on the coast—the water can retreat nearly a mile, revealing a vast stretch of soft sand and shallow water.

From the balcony, watch for dolphins passing by in the morning. During winter, you may even spot whales moving through the deeper water offshore. Time your beach walk around low tide to experience the shoreline at its most expansive — the tide pools at Cholla Bay are the best octopus hunting on this coast, and that's where the name came from. Our guest guide has more tips for making the most of it.

The condo

One bedroom, a full kitchen, and doors that open the whole wall to the sea.

Comfortable for two, easy for four. Velero is the center tower — the widest 180-degree view of the three — and we're on the sixteenth floor: high enough for the long view down the beach, low enough to still hear the water.

Sleeping. A king bed in the bedroom with blackout curtains and a ceiling fan, plus a full sleeper sofa in the living room. Four guests maximum — the HOA's rule, and it counts everyone.

Kitchen. Full SMEG appliance package, a full-size fridge, and three coffee machines — drip, Keurig and Nespresso Vertuo. Bring your own pods or ground coffee; that's the one thing guests always forget.

More about the condo

The doors. Two big sliders open the living room and the bedroom onto the balcony, and they're the best thing about the place.

The guest pantry. Beach towels, beach chairs and beach gear are already here, so leave yours at home. Sand buckets and tools, boogie boards and pool noodles live in the laundry room, and we keep pickleball paddles and balls for the resort's racquet club.

How everything works — door code, thermostat, TVs, hot water — lives in the guest manual.

The resort

You could never leave the property and still have a great week.

Encantame Towers is three towers on a third of a mile of beachfront — the tallest buildings in Sonora, with the state's only rooftop pools. Five places to eat and drink, a dozen ways to get wet, and a racquet club.

Pools. Heated in winter, chilled in summer, open 9am to 10pm. A huge infinity-edge main pool with the Aqua swim-up bar, two lazy rivers, two waterslides, two corner infinity pools, oversized jacuzzis, shallow areas for small kids and sunken fire pits for after sunset. Guests now also get the pools next door at Encantame Soleil — swim-up bar, lazy river, slide, splash pad and jacuzzi — through the gate by the Verano tower.

Level 24. Two adults-only sky pools crown the 24th floors — one on Viento with the Level 24 bar, one on Verano. Hot tub, food and drinks, and the best view on the property.

Santo Coyote Ocean Cantina. East side of the pool, spectacular ocean views. This is the one we tell everyone not to miss.

Gated, guarded, calm. The whole community sits behind staffed gates with 24/7 security and monitoring — you and the car are inside them for the entire stay.

Everything else on the property

Marea Sports Bar. West side of the pool — the casual hangout, with a pool table, big views, and good appetizers, burgers and desserts.

Blue Palm Café. In the front lobby, 8am to 3:30pm, closed Wednesdays. Starbucks coffee plus breakfast and lunch.

Blue Harbor Market. The convenience store at Plaza Encantame just outside the second set of gates, with a satellite store beside the front lobby.

Also here. Fitness center and yoga studio, spa treatments, a game room with golf simulators, a Family Center with kids' activities and movie nights, and a racquet club with pickleball, tennis and basketball. The concierge books fishing charters, boat and jet-ski rentals, ATVs, sunset cruises and horseback riding.

Pool rules worth knowing before you pack

No glass and no coolers in the pool area — but personal insulated cups are welcome, so bring the good tumbler. Children under 12 need an adult with them.
